DETROIT, MI - League officials have confirmed that the Detroit Tigers have agreed in principle to send Joba Chamberlain to the World Champion San Francisco Giants for Cole Hamels. Final terms of the trade were not available at the time this article was printed, however.
Sources close to the team have said that Detroit is not done dealing, and the team ownership is currently exploring talks to deal another one of its highly touted youngsters. Combined with the acquisition of veterans Ortiz and Chamberlain earlier this year, we can't help but ask...is Detroit building to compete for the playoffs THIS year? Management has stressed patience in Detroit's most recent iteration of rebuilding, claiming as recently as last year that the team was on a three-year plan to return to the playoffs. Recent moves betray that notion. While skeptics have questioned management's wisdom with these moves (given Detroit's precarious financial position), there is growing sentiment in league circles that Detroit is positioning itself for a playoff run in 2018. |
